Natural Health Products
In Canada, Natural health products (NHPs) are health products or supplements containing naturally-occurring substances that are formulated to restore or maintain good health.
All NHPs sold in Canada must adhere to the Natural Health Product Regulations and must be first approved for sale in Canada by the Natural and Non-prescription Drug Health Product Directorate (NNHPD) of Health Canada.
When a product has been successfully reviewed and approved by the NNHPD it receives an 8-digit Natural Product Number (NPN). All NHPs must have an NPN to be sold in Canada, including online retailers (e.g. Amazon) that sell to Canada.
In other words, the NPN is your key to the Canadian market. Without a NPN, you will not be able to sell your health products legally anywhere in Canada.
NHPs come in different dosage forms, such as capsules, tablets, powder, gels, etc. Even tea bags or frozen fruit infusers can be licensed as NHPs with proper health claims.
